Phil Jackson Reveals Carmelo Anthony Rift Led to Knicks Exit
BREAKING: Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson has revealed that his tumultuous relationship with star player Carmelo Anthony ultimately forced him out of the New York Knicks. In his upcoming book, “Masters of the Game: A Conversational History of the NBA in 75 Legendary Players,” set for release on October 31, 2023, Jackson details the explosive tensions that culminated in his departure from the franchise in June 2017.
Jackson’s candid reflections come as a shock to many fans and analysts who have long scrutinized his presidency, which lasted from 2014 to 2017. He reveals a critical conversation with Knicks owner James Dolan, where Dolan expressed concerns about media backlash. Jackson countered, stating, “Unfortunately my relationship with Carmelo is kind of busted, and if he’s going to be here, it’s probably best that I go.” This admission highlights the profound impact of their strained dynamics on the team’s leadership.
The revelations raise urgent questions about team dynamics and leadership in professional sports. Jackson’s struggles with Anthony became a defining aspect of his tenure, leading to a series of public criticisms that strained their relationship beyond repair. In the book, Jackson recalls advocating for Anthony’s trade, stating, “I said, ‘I don’t want Carmelo back on the team; we’ve got to find a way to trade him.'”
Despite Jackson’s departure, the Knicks’ situation did not improve. Just three months later, Anthony was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder after waiving his no-trade clause, a move he attributes directly to Jackson’s influence. In a recent conversation with Dwyane Wade, Anthony stated emphatically, “Phil pushed me out of New York. I struggled to leave New York.”
Jackson also reflects on his coaching choices, admitting that hiring Derek Fisher was a mistake, citing Fisher’s lack of readiness for the role. He also touched on the personal costs of his time with the Knicks, revealing that the job strained his relationship with Jeanie Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. “She got pressure from the league because they worried about the idea of collusion that could happen between an owner and a president,” Jackson explained.
The release of “Masters of the Game” promises to offer deeper insights into Jackson’s storied career, along with anecdotes about other NBA legends like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. As fans and analysts prepare for the book’s launch, discussions around Jackson’s legacy and the implications of his revelations will undoubtedly intensify.
