Pittsburgh Prepares for Major Snowstorm with 12-Inch Forecast
UPDATE: Pittsburgh is bracing for a major snowstorm, with forecasts predicting accumulations of up to 12 inches this weekend. As the city prepares for the imminent winter weather, Mayor Corey O’Connor is leading a comprehensive response plan to ensure the safety of residents and emergency crews.
City officials have been mobilizing resources in anticipation of the storm, which is expected to begin affecting the area shortly. “Our staff has been preparing for the last few days,” Mayor O’Connor stated in a recent announcement. The city’s action plan includes deploying 75 Department of Public Works (DPW) trucks and 19 alternative vehicles equipped with plows and spreaders to clear the roads.
Pittsburgh’s preparations also encompass the establishment of a snow operations office activated for continuous service throughout the storm. The city’s heavy equipment facility and garage will remain open all weekend to address any maintenance issues that arise, ensuring operational readiness. Despite facing challenges, including 40 trucks currently out of commission and an inoperative plow tracker, officials are committed to maximizing available resources.
In addition to snow removal efforts, city officials are urging residents to avoid street parking to facilitate efficient snow clearing and ensure clear access for emergency services. Mayor O’Connor has expressed confidence in the city’s reserves, with 8,000 tons of salt on hand, ready to be deployed as needed.
As the storm intensifies, there are discussions about potentially declaring a state of emergency. This declaration would unlock additional support from Pennsylvania and federal emergency management agencies, should conditions necessitate such action.
Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest developments and remain vigilant as the snowstorm approaches. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and further updates will be communicated as new information becomes available.
Stay safe, Pittsburgh—this winter storm is rapidly approaching, and preparations are in full swing.
