UPDATE: The 2026 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, is underway, but this year’s celebration is marked by a rare weather twist: rain. For the first time in 20 years, showers are drenching the parade, adding a unique element to the festivities as they kick off today, January 1, 2026, at 8 a.m. PT.

Despite the wet weather, the parade promises to dazzle with 19 marching bands, 17 equestrian groups, and 39 exquisitely decorated floats spanning a 5.5-mile route. This year’s theme, “The Magic in Teamwork,” is fittingly highlighted by the presence of grand marshal Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a basketball legend and community advocate. Johnson’s journey from sports icon to philanthropist underscores the spirit of resilience celebrated today.

As the rain pours, organizers are ensuring that the event honors the memory of the 31 victims lost in the devastating Eaton and Palisades fires that struck nearly a year ago on January 7, 2025. Acknowledgments will be made throughout the parade for survivors and first responders, adding a poignant layer to the festivities.

The rain is expected to continue throughout the day, but that hasn’t dampened spirits. Parade attendees are braving the elements, celebrating the start of a new year with vibrant displays of community and creativity.
