Rocky Mount Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Shooting Girlfriend

UPDATE: A Rocky Mount man has been charged with attempted murder after his girlfriend was shot multiple times in an alarming incident on October 14, 2023, near Whitakers, North Carolina. According to Edgecombe County deputies, the shooting occurred at a residence on Speights Chapel Road during a domestic dispute.

Authorities received the first call reporting the gunfire shortly after noon. A second urgent call indicated that a woman at the same address had sustained gunshot wounds. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and began immediate first aid until emergency medical services arrived to transport her to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

Detectives quickly launched an investigation and identified the suspect as Hayward Mann, 49, the victim’s boyfriend. After fleeing the scene, Mann was located and apprehended by deputies without incident. He was found in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest, which has since been recovered.

Mann faces serious charges, including felony attempted first-degree murder. He is currently being held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center and is set to appear in court on Wednesday morning at the Edgecombe County Courthouse in Tarboro.
