School Bus Driver Dies After Medical Emergency in Verona Crash

UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in Verona, N.Y. on Monday when a school bus driver died after suffering a medical emergency while driving. The crash occurred at approximately 12:25 p.m. along State Routes 31 and 365, officials report.

According to Trooper Jennifer Jiron of the State Police, the unidentified driver was traveling westbound on State Route 31 when he suddenly collapsed, causing the bus to veer off the road and crash into a snowbank. Remarkably, no students were on board at the time of the incident.

A second bus driver and a school bus aide, who were present in the vehicle, quickly sprang into action. They attempted to halt the bus and provide assistance to their colleague.

“They called 911 and began CPR,”

Trooper Jiron stated. Emergency responders transported the driver to Oneida Health Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Fortunately, the other two individuals in the bus were unharmed, and no significant damage occurred to the vehicle itself. The bus was owned by First Student and contracted by the Rome City School District.

This incident highlights the urgent need for medical preparedness among drivers, particularly those transporting children. As officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, the community mourns the loss of a dedicated driver.
