Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Scores 55 in Thunder’s 2OT Victory
UPDATE: In an electrifying showdown, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a staggering 55 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder triumphed over the Indiana Pacers 141-135 in double overtime on October 26, 2023. This marks the Thunder’s second consecutive double-overtime game to start the season, a historic feat in the NBA.
Just moments after the final buzzer, Gilgeous-Alexander, exhausted yet elated, stated, “I’m tired, but it’s expected. It’s a good way to break the ice on the season.” His performance not only set a career high but also underscored the intensity of the match, reminiscent of last season’s thrilling Finals.
Despite missing key players like Jalen Williams and Isaiah Joe, the Thunder showcased resilience. Second-year guard Ajay Mitchell stepped up with a career-best 26 points, helping to secure the win. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised Mitchell’s poise under pressure, stating, “He didn’t really blink.” This victory is crucial as it establishes early momentum in the season.
The game was a nail-biter, with the Thunder trailing 118-113 in the first overtime. Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the importance of each game, stating, “The beginning of the season is just as important as the end.” His leadership was evident as he played a grueling 45 minutes, following his 47-minute opener against the Houston Rockets.
The Pacers, already without star point guard Tyrese Haliburton for the season, faced additional setbacks when Aaron Nesmith fouled out and Andrew Nembhard suffered a shoulder injury. Coach Rick Carlisle expressed concern over Nembhard’s condition, stating it could “potentially present some big challenges.”
Despite these challenges, the Pacers pushed the Thunder to their limits, with Pascal Siakam contributing 32 points and 15 rebounds, and Bennedict Mathurin scoring 36 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Carlisle noted, “Grit is what our makeup is going to have to be this year,” highlighting the team’s determination amidst adversity.
As the Thunder celebrate this hard-fought victory, eyes will be on their next match and whether they can maintain this momentum. The early season is proving to be a test of endurance and skill, with fans eager for what lies ahead.
