Shocking Death of Oliver Odell Rocks “The Hunting Party” Season Premiere
UPDATE: NBC’s crime drama “The Hunting Party” has stunned fans with the unexpected death of main character Oliver Odell, portrayed by Nick Wechsler, during the highly anticipated season 2 premiere that aired on January 8, 2025.
In a shocking turn of events, viewers learned that Oliver did not survive the poisoning that occurred in the season 1 finale. The heartbreaking news was confirmed through a poignant scene featuring FBI secret agent Bex Henderson, played by Melissa Roxburgh, mourning the loss of her ex. This offscreen death has left fans reeling, especially given Wechsler’s presence in promotional materials for the new season, leading many to believe his character would continue.
Executive producer JJ Bailey revealed to TVLine that the decision to kill off Oliver was not taken lightly. The creative team faced significant challenges in incorporating Oliver into future storylines. “One thing that we sort of faced was creatively, it was hard to involve [Oliver] in the field,” Bailey explained, emphasizing the struggle to find narratives that aligned with both Oliver’s character and Bex’s evolving storyline.
Fellow executive producer Jake Coburn echoed these sentiments, stating, “I think the character [of Oliver] was so intricately tied to [Bex’s] past… it felt like we’d squeezed all the juice from the relationship that we could.” The decision marks a pivotal moment for the series as it shifts focus toward Bex’s future and her ongoing battle against escaped serial killers.
Roxburgh, who portrayed Bex, expressed her surprise at the character’s fate, having filmed the dramatic season 1 finale under the impression that Oliver might survive. “I was really hoping [he’d live]. But you know what? It’s a great plot twist,” she noted. This twist is expected to draw viewers back to the show as they grapple with the emotional fallout of Oliver’s death.
As season 2 unfolds, Bex is set to reassemble her team to confront the dangers posed by the escaped killers from the notorious underground prison known as The Pit. The introduction of the mysterious Eve Lazarus, played by Kari Matchett, as the new team leader adds another layer of intrigue, leaving Bex and her teammates always suspicious of Lazarus’s true intentions.
Fans can catch “The Hunting Party” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, with episodes available for streaming on Peacock the following day. The dramatic developments in this season promise to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as they navigate the aftermath of Oliver Odell’s shocking demise.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses and the mysteries surrounding Bex and her team deepen.
