Skyline High Honors Coach John Beam with Urgent Tribute Screening

Charles Lassey, a Class of 2000 alumnus, expressed the urgency behind this tribute: “Our 20th was during COVID. It took Coach Beam getting taken away from us to say, ‘Hey. We need to do something.'”

The event not only honored Beam’s contributions but also served as a fundraiser for a teacher appreciation grant. Attendees recalled Beam’s unwavering dedication, with Christina Macalino, also from the Class of 2000, reminiscing about his iconic mustache and tough love approach. “He was supportive, inspiring,” she said, highlighting how he believed in the potential of every student.

Beam, who devoted 45 years to teaching and coaching in Oakland, left a legacy of over 20 athletes who ascended to the NFL. Tragically, he was shot and killed on November 18, 2022, at Laney College, where he served as athletic director. Authorities classified the incident as a targeted shooting allegedly involving a former student.

The memorial was a powerful testament to Beam’s influence. Mark Stauffer, a Class of 1978 alumnus, described him as a father figure who transformed lives, saying, “He took guys out of the gutter and turned them into Pro-Bowlers.”

Even those who had never been directly coached by Beam, like Eric Romero from the Class of 2017, came to show solidarity. Romero noted Beam’s ability to see beyond athletics, emphasizing, “He saw them for what they were as a person.”
