Across the United States, major tech players like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are projected to invest a staggering $465 billion in AI infrastructure by 2025, according to Goldman Sachs. As data center capacity expands in Vernon, the city is poised to play a critical role in this national shift.

Why This Matters NOW: As the demand for AI capabilities skyrockets, Vernon has emerged as an attractive alternative to the increasingly crowded One Wilshire building in downtown Los Angeles. The city offers independent utility services and competitively priced power, providing a unique advantage for data center developers. With the ability to deliver electricity at rates up to 50% lower than other providers, Vernon is rapidly becoming a go-to destination for data investments.

This influx is drawing attention from industry experts. “We haven’t seen new data center development in a long time in Southern California,” stated Darren Eades, managing director of JLL, specializing in data centers. “There’s a new wave that’s hitting the coast, primarily driven by AI.” Developers, including Goodman Group and Digital Realty, are working to expand their operations in Vernon.

The city’s lack of local opposition, due to its sparse population, means fewer hurdles in establishing new facilities. Unlike many communities nationwide that have blocked data center expansions due to environmental concerns, Vernon has received no objections from residents regarding the new developments. A city spokesperson confirmed, “No additional power or water purchases are needed to support the new electrical load and water demand.”

However, experts caution that the growing demand for power may lead to increased costs in the future. California ranks as the third-largest data center hub in the U.S., and some analysts predict that unless infrastructure investments keep pace, electricity rates will inevitably rise. Utilities like Pacific Gas & Electric plan to spend $73 billion upgrading transmission lines to meet this escalating demand.

As Vernon positions itself at the forefront of the AI revolution, the stakes remain high. “We didn’t use to speak in megawatts when we thought of data centers; we used to think in terms of just kilowatts,” said Robert Brooks, vice president of sales at Lambda, a cloud computing firm leasing space in LAX01.
