Spare the Air Alert Issued for New Year’s Day in Bay Area
URGENT UPDATE: The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has just issued a Spare the Air alert for New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, prohibiting wood burning to combat elevated pollution levels. This directive aims to reduce the impact of personal fireworks and residential wood burning, which are anticipated to contribute to worsening air quality.
Authorities warn that fine particulate matter is expected to surge into the 80s on Thursday, a significant increase from the healthy levels observed earlier in the week. The air quality index has been moderately healthy in the past days, but with pollution levels reaching 2.5, the alert is now in effect. Residents are urged to take precautions, especially those with respiratory conditions.
The alert coincides with a forecast of warming weather and an incoming atmospheric river, which is expected to bring widespread showers. Rainfall amounts could reach 2-3 inches in heavily affected areas, with the National Weather Service predicting widespread showers to begin on Wednesday.
In addition to the air quality concerns, residents in coastal areas are alerted to a coastal flood advisory extending from Cloverdale to Monterey. This advisory is set to take effect at 5 a.m. on January 1 and will last until 2 p.m. on January 3.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued four Spare the Air alerts throughout 2025, including one during the Thanksgiving holiday. As pollution levels are set to rise, officials emphasize that taking preventive measures is crucial for community health.
As the New Year approaches, residents are strongly encouraged to refrain from using wood-burning fireplaces or outdoor fire pits. These actions will help protect air quality during a time when many are celebrating.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
