UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested and charged following a shocking attack on a New York University student in Greenwich Village earlier this week. James Rizzo, 45, who has a lengthy criminal history including 16 prior arrests, faces serious charges after the violent incident was caught on video.

The assault occurred on Monday morning at approximately 9:30 AM in front of 735 Broadway. The 20-year-old victim was walking to class when Rizzo approached from behind, pulling her hair and slapping her head and buttocks, ultimately knocking her to the ground. Bystanders were horrified as they witnessed the attack and immediately came to her aid, dialing 911.

“I saw the video as well, which was scary and very disturbing,” said NYU graduate student Ashlyn Prieto. “It’s definitely something to be more on the lookout, especially as my commute towards the park overlaps with that route. It was very scary.”

Rizzo, released from state prison in September 2023 after serving two years for persistent sexual abuse, was previously charged with murder in 1997. He was arrested on Tuesday following police responses to reports of a man sleeping in a nearby building, leading to the connection with the assault.

The NYPD has charged Rizzo with persistent sexual abuse, forcible touching, and assault. He did not provide any comments as he was escorted from the 6th precinct in handcuffs.

“I’ve always been concerned about safety a little bit, but definitely seeing something happen like that brings my concerns to the forefront,” said Rachel Rosenberg, an NYU freshman.

NYU officials have expressed relief that a suspect is in custody and are providing support to the victim. “The University is pleased that a suspect has been apprehended in the attack that took place Monday morning,” stated NYU spokesperson John Beckman. “We take this incident very seriously and are continuing to offer support to the student.”

Investigators are now looking into whether Rizzo may be linked to other random attacks on female students at NYU, raising further concerns about campus safety in the wake of this disturbing incident.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as police continue their investigation. This incident highlights the urgent need for heightened vigilance in community safety, especially in busy urban environments.
