Tigers Face $60 Million Arbitration Challenge with 14 Players
UPDATE: The Detroit Tigers are entering a critical offseason with 14 players eligible for salary arbitration, projected to cost the team a staggering $60.05 million. This urgent situation has emerged as the Tigers prepare to make pivotal decisions by November 21, 2023.
The arbitration-eligible players include a mix of seasoned athletes and newcomers. Notably, ace left-hander Tarik Skubal, with five years and 114 days of MLB service time, is set to enter his final arbitration year before free agency eligibility in 2026. On the other hand, reliever Tyler Holton is making his first foray into arbitration after completing three years and 47 days of service.
While these players are not free agents, they are leveraging the arbitration process to negotiate higher salaries. Typically, players with fewer than three years of service earn the league minimum, currently set at $780,000 for 2026. However, players can also tap into bonuses from MLB’s pre-arbitration performance pool.
The Tigers must decide which players to tender contracts to, ensuring they remain under team control. Any unresolved arbitration cases will proceed to hearings during spring training. Historically, the Tigers have rarely gone to arbitration, with their last hearing occurring in 2019 against right-hander Michael Fulmer, which they won.
Notably, not every eligible player is guaranteed a tender. Potential non-tender candidates include right-handers Jason Foley, Alex Lange, and Beau Brieske, who all faced significant injuries during the 2025 season.
As the clock ticks down to the contract tender deadline, the Tigers’ management is under pressure to navigate these financial waters effectively. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely as the team prepares for a potentially pivotal offseason, marking a crucial juncture in their strategy moving forward.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops and impacts the future of the Tigers’ roster.
