Tom Izzo Responds Urgently to Paul Davis Ejection During Game
UPDATE: Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo expressed his frustration following the ejection of former Spartans star Paul Davis during Monday night’s game against USC. The incident occurred with just over six minutes remaining in the game, where Michigan State held a commanding lead of 21 points.
Davis, a crucial member of the Spartans’ 2005 Final Four team, exchanged words with referee Jeffrey Anderson, prompting a stoppage in play. After discussing the situation with Anderson, Izzo confronted Davis from across the court, visibly upset, exclaiming, “What the f— are you doing?”
After the 12th-ranked Spartans secured an 80-51 victory, Izzo made his feelings clear. “You know I love Paul Davis. He’s one of my favorite guys,” he stated. However, he added, “What he said — he should never say anywhere in the world. That ticked me off.” Izzo confirmed that Davis’s outburst was neither racial nor sexual but insisted it was an inappropriate comment that warranted a discussion.
Izzo emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with Davis, who ranks 10th all-time at Michigan State with 1,718 career points. “I’m going to tell him he was wrong like I would my son, like I would my daughter, like I would my player,” Izzo remarked, affirming Davis’s valuable role in the program.
The ejection moment overshadowed Izzo’s historic milestone, marking his 750th career victory, placing him eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches. Michigan State (13-2) continues to impress, leading the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.
Davis’s ejection was particularly unusual as he had been a supportive presence for the team, frequently attending games. As he was escorted out by Michigan State associate athletic director Seth Kesler, Izzo expressed his disappointment that Davis made such a mistake. “He kind of got after the official, and he was 150 percent wrong,” Izzo stated, underscoring the rarity of agreeing with a referee.
Next for Michigan State is to maintain their strong start and ensure that Davis remains an integral part of their community. With the season progressing, fans will be closely watching how this incident affects team dynamics moving forward. The Spartans look to continue their winning ways, and despite the setback with Davis, the team is poised for success.
