Trump Vows to Resolve Afghanistan-Pakistan Crisis “Very Quickly”
UPDATE: U.S. President Donald Trump declared today he will resolve the escalating Afghanistan-Pakistan crisis “very quickly,” as peace negotiations enter their second day. This urgent statement comes as tensions rise following intense clashes earlier this month that have marked the deadliest fighting between the two nations in several years.
As peace talks unfold in Istanbul, the situation remains critical. Both countries accuse each other of aggression, heightening fears in a region already strained by the resurgence of militant groups like al-Qaida. The conflict has resulted in numerous casualties, with dozens dead and hundreds injured in recent violence.
Trump made the announcement on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, emphasizing his commitment to mediate between the two nations. “I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up,” he stated. “But I’ll get that solved very quickly.” His comments could bolster Pakistan’s political and military leaders, who are eager for stronger ties with Washington.
The ongoing discussions aim to convert a fragile ceasefire, achieved in Doha earlier this month, into a sustainable peace framework. The Afghan delegation has put forward a draft that insists on Pakistan respecting Afghanistan’s territorial integrity and not allowing any anti-Afghan groups to operate from its territory. In response, the Pakistani side submitted a second draft on Saturday night.
The conflict’s origins trace back to accusations from Pakistan that Afghanistan is harboring militants responsible for cross-border attacks. In contrast, Taliban-controlled media RTA reported that the Afghan side is willing to establish a “four-way channel” to monitor the ceasefire and share information regarding violations.
While no Pakistani officials were immediately available to comment, Trump’s involvement is seen as a potential catalyst for positive change in the region. Pakistan has previously commended Trump for his role in de-escalating tensions with India, underscoring the importance of U.S. influence in South Asian geopolitics.
As the talks continue, the world watches closely. The stakes are high, and with Trump’s promise to act swiftly, the potential for a breakthrough is palpable. Keep an eye on this developing story as it unfolds.
