UPDATE: Viewership for the first two games of the World Series has dropped a staggering 14% compared to last year, as the Los Angeles Dodgers face off against the Toronto Blue Jays. The latest figures reveal that the two games averaged just 12.5 million viewers across platforms, significantly lower than last year’s 14.55 million for the Dodgers versus the New York Yankees.

The early games of this year’s Series, broadcast on Fox, Fox Deportes, and streaming on the Fox Sports app, were viewed by a combined total of 32.6 million in the U.S., Canada, and Japan, marking the highest viewership since the historic 2016 World Series when the Chicago Cubs ended their 108-year championship drought.

In stark contrast, Canadian audiences are setting records. Game 1 attracted 7 million viewers, while Game 2 drew 6.6 million, making them the two most-watched Blue Jays games ever on Sportsnet. Additionally, the opener was broadcast on TVA Sports with French-language commentary, garnering 502,000 viewers, the channel’s highest-rated game.

Japan also saw impressive numbers, with Game 1 drawing an average of 11.8 million on NHK-G, the most-watched World Series game in Japanese history on a single network. Game 2 followed with 9.5 million, resulting in a two-game average of 10.7 million viewers in Japan alone.

The drop in U.S. viewership is significant, especially when compared to last year’s opener, which saw 15.2 million viewers— the most-watched Series game since 2019. The Dodgers’ Game 2 last year attracted 13.44 million viewers, indicating a steep decline in American interest this season.

What’s behind this decline? Experts speculate on various factors, from team matchups to the ongoing competition for viewers’ attention amid a crowded sports landscape. The impact on MLB’s brand and advertising revenues could be profound if this trend continues.

With the World Series still in its early stages, all eyes will be on Game 3 and beyond to see if viewership rebounds or if the downward trend persists. Fans and analysts alike are eager for updates, as the stakes rise and the drama unfolds on the field.

As the Series progresses, stay tuned for further updates on viewership trends and game highlights that could change the narrative of this championship showdown.
