UPDATE: The No. 2-seed UConn Huskies have advanced to the Big East Championship after a commanding 67-51 victory over No. 11-seed Georgetown on March 12, 2024. Freshman star Braylon Mullins led the charge with an impressive 21 points, showcasing his determination despite a challenging shooting night.

In a high-stakes semifinal matchup at Madison Square Garden, Mullins, who struggled with his three-point shooting earlier in the tournament, found alternative ways to score. The Huskies, now boasting a record of 28-4, overcame a dismal 2-for-12 start from beyond the arc, emphasizing their resilience and teamwork.

Mullins utilized an array of mid-range shots and a spectacular double-clutch layup to keep the momentum alive, stating, “I was making difficult shots, and we took that into the second half.” He became the first UConn freshman to score over 20 points in a Big East Tournament game since Jerome Dyson in 2007.

The victory is historic for the Huskies, marking their 12th appearance in the Big East Championship, with a winning record of 8-3 in these finals. Head Coach Dan Hurley emphasized the importance of competing for championships, saying, “This is why you choose to come to UConn.”

UConn’s win was not without its challenges. The team faced foul trouble, limiting key players like Tarris Reed Jr., who despite contributing four points, five rebounds, and five assists in the first half, was sidelined for much of the second half due to fouls. Nevertheless, UConn dominated the boards, with Silas Demary Jr. grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

The Huskies are set to face the defending Big East champions, St. John’s, in the final showdown. UConn previously defeated St. John’s by 32 points in their last encounter, but this upcoming clash promises to be intense. “I feel like it’s kind of like their home court, so expect them to come out to play hard,” Hurley noted, urging his team to prepare adequately.

Fans can catch the championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., broadcast live on Fox. As the excitement builds, the Huskies aim to capture their next title, fueled by Mullins’ determination and the team’s unwavering spirit.
