UCSB Women’s Basketball Falls 69-62 to UC Riverside, Defense Crumbles

URGENT UPDATE: The UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team continues to struggle, suffering a 69-62 defeat against UC Riverside on February 2, 2023, marking their fourth loss in five games. Coach Renee Jimenez expressed frustration over the team’s defensive collapse, particularly in the critical moments of both halves.

The Gauchos’ inability to maintain defensive intensity was evident as they surrendered a staggering 24 points in the second quarter and 21 points in the fourth, crucial periods that allowed Riverside to seize control of the game. “We did not execute the scout — I mean, not even close,” Jimenez stated, emphasizing the need for improvement as they fight to secure a better position in the Big West Conference standings.

Currently sitting at 16-7 overall and 8-6 in conference play, UCSB now finds itself three games behind the fourth-place team, a position critical for securing a bye in the upcoming Big West Tournament. Just seven games remain in the regular season, increasing the urgency for the Gauchos to turn their fortunes around.

Despite the loss, sophomore standout Hannah Wickstrom delivered an impressive performance, scoring 27 points while shooting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Her scoring prowess was a bright spot amidst a dismal shooting night for the team, which managed just 4-of-19 from three-point range.

The Gauchos started strong, with freshman Chauncey Andersen contributing a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. However, their shooting slump, which has seen them drop from 39.5% accuracy in three-point shooting to 33.9%, has left them struggling to keep pace.

UCSB’s next opportunity to bounce back comes on Saturday, February 4, at 2 p.m. as they host Cal Poly. Jimenez emphasized the need for her team to focus on defense and communication going forward: “We need to be more connected defensively. It was frustrating.”
