UDOT Completes US-191 Realignment, Boosting Safety for Travelers

UPDATE: The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has just announced the completion of the US-191 Realignment Project, a critical safety upgrade for travelers heading to Flaming Gorge. This project, which spans a 2.6-mile stretch of road north of Vernal, aims to significantly enhance safety and efficiency, benefiting both local residents and out-of-state visitors.

The realignment replaces hazardous steep switchbacks with a straighter, safer road layout, incorporating standard horizontal curves. Additionally, it features a northbound climbing lane for heavy vehicles, a southbound passing lane, a new runaway truck ramp, and standard-width shoulders to improve recovery zones. These enhancements are crucial for maintaining safety, particularly for the many truckers and tourists who frequent this busy route.

UDOT officials confirm that the project was made possible through a groundbreaking public-private partnership with Simplot Phosphates. This collaboration enabled the movement of millions of cubic yards of earth for new road embankments, ultimately saving taxpayers around $40 million. According to Rob Clayton, region 3 director for UDOT, the new alignment is a game-changer for road safety:

“I think everybody is familiar with this section of the roadway and the switchbacks that used to exist here. The new alignment is just going to be a much better situation for everybody that uses this road.”

This project marks one of Utah’s first successful public-private partnerships in transportation, demonstrating how collaboration can lead to innovative solutions. Senator Ron Winterton expressed his approval, emphasizing the project’s impact on the traveling public:

“We have a lot of out-of-state travelers, truckers, and tourists that come down off there and get themselves in trouble. The mountain is steep; it has to be respected,”

he stated. Winterton also noted that without Simplot’s involvement and federal funding, these critical improvements could have taken decades to materialize.
