URGENT: 31st HIV Case Confirmed in Penobscot County Outbreak

BREAKING: Just confirmed, a 31st HIV case has emerged in the ongoing outbreak in Penobscot County, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC). This alarming rise highlights the urgent public health crisis that continues to escalate in the region, initially reported in October 2023.

The latest positive test adds to a growing concern as nearly all affected individuals have reported a history of injecting drugs or homelessness within the last year. Public health officials stress that the actual number of cases is likely higher, prompting community organizations across Maine to intensify testing and prevention efforts.

This surge in cases follows the identification of five new cases in Cumberland County, also linked to drug use. Federal representatives from the CDC are currently in Penobscot County for a crucial three-week visit to assist with the HIV response efforts.

While there is currently no known cure, effective medication exists to manage the disease. The Maine CDC reports that Penobscot County typically sees only two new HIV cases each year, underscoring the severity of this outbreak.

Adding to the complexity, nearly all reported cases in the county are among individuals who also tested positive for hepatitis C, a liver disease that can lead to serious long-term health issues, including liver cancer.

As the situation develops, the Maine CDC reports that 65% of HIV patients in this outbreak have connected to care within 30 days of their diagnosis. Furthermore, 57% of those currently residing in Maine have reached viral suppression during their last testing, highlighting some progress amidst the crisis.
