Urgent: ByHeart Baby Formula Recall Expands Amid Botulism Outbreak
UPDATE: A significant recall of ByHeart organic infant formula has just expanded amid a growing outbreak of infant botulism, affecting at least 15 infants in 12 states. This alarming development was confirmed by state and federal health officials on Tuesday, as the number of affected cases has surged from 13 cases in 10 states reported just days ago.
Parents across the country are urged to take immediate action: If you have ByHeart formula in your home, you must discontinue use and dispose of the product right away. This outbreak, which began in mid-August, has raised serious concerns for the health and safety of infants, particularly those aged 2 weeks to 5 months who were hospitalized after consuming the tainted formula.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked the outbreak to ByHeart’s powdered formula, following tests that confirmed the presence of the bacteria responsible for the toxin in a sample taken from an open can fed to an ill infant in California. “These mice got sick really quickly,” stated Dr. Pan during an interview, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Despite ByHeart officials claiming that no unopened products tested positive for the harmful bacteria, they have cooperated closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in implementing this extensive recall. The FDA is currently investigating 84 cases of infant botulism detected since August, with over a third of those cases linked to ByHeart’s formula.
This alarming spike in infant botulism cases—typically affecting fewer than 200 babies each year in the U.S.—is particularly troubling. Symptoms can take weeks to develop and include poor feeding, loss of head control, and difficulty breathing. Infants are especially vulnerable as their gut microbiomes are not yet developed enough to combat the spores responsible for the toxin.
Treatment options are limited, with the only effective medication known as BabyBIG, an IV treatment derived from the pooled blood plasma of adults immunized against botulism. Each vial of BabyBIG costs a staggering $69,300. The CDC confirms that all affected infants have received this critical treatment.
While ByHeart’s market share is relatively small—only representing about 1% of all infant formula sales in the U.S.—the implications of this outbreak echo the nationwide formula shortages experienced in 2021 and 2022. During that crisis, four infants fell ill from a different contamination, leading to plant shutdowns and recalls that disrupted supplies for millions of families.
Health officials are taking significant steps to reassess the safety of infant formulas in the U.S. Under the directive of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the FDA is set to launch “Operation Stork Speed,” the first comprehensive review of infant formula ingredients since 1998. This initiative aims to ensure that the nutritional needs of infants are met and that safety standards are upheld.
As this story develops, parents are advised to stay informed and heed the warnings issued by health authorities. Follow updates closely as the CDC and FDA continue their investigations into this urgent public health matter. Share this information with your networks to help protect vulnerable infants nationwide.
