UPDATE: A critical section of Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains remains closed following severe damage caused by recent storms, officials confirmed on December 30, 2023. The closure affects a stretch from Cedar Springs, approximately 3.3 miles east of Newcomb’s Ranch, to Highway 138.

Caltrans reported extensive destruction at least in four locations along the highway, with photos revealing sections that have buckled, broken apart, or collapsed. The agency is actively assessing the damage, although initial evaluations indicate that repairs will take considerable time.

According to Mike Leum, Assistant Director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, storm runoff likely undermined parts of the roadway, leading to dangerous collapses. He highlighted hazardous icy conditions, noting that a fire engine became stuck on large patches of ice before being towed to safety.

“It will be a while until the road is repaired,” Leum stated on Instagram. “Drivers should avoid this area until further notice.”

Forecasts predict additional storms on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, raising concerns about further deterioration of the damaged highway. The National Weather Service has already issued a flood watch for much of Los Angeles County as heavy rains are expected this week.

Travelers are advised to seek alternative routes and stay informed about weather conditions. The ongoing situation highlights the urgent need for infrastructure assessments in the wake of extreme weather events. Residents and commuters are encouraged to prioritize safety and remain vigilant as repairs to this crucial thoroughfare are planned.

Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available regarding the repair timeline and potential impacts from incoming storms.
