UPDATE: The National Weather Service has just issued an urgent coastal flood statement for four New Jersey counties, effective Sunday, October 15, 2023, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Residents of Hudson, Bergen, Essex, and Union counties are warned to prepare for significant flooding with expectations of up to half a foot of inundation in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.

This warning comes as heavy rain is forecasted, raising alarms for those living in flood-prone regions. The National Weather Service emphasizes, “Brief minor flooding of the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline” is anticipated. Residents are urged to take immediate action to ensure their safety.

Authorities caution, “Do not drive through flooded roadways.” Just 12 inches of rushing water can sweep away most vehicles, posing a serious danger to drivers and pedestrians alike. Flash flooding can occur rapidly, even in areas that are not currently experiencing rain.

For those in affected areas, following safety protocols is critical. The National Weather Service advises moving to higher ground and adhering to evacuation orders if issued. If you notice signs of electrical hazards, such as sparks or unusual noises, evacuate immediately.

In addition to flooding, the storm may bring hazardous driving conditions. Officials recommend maintaining safe distances while driving and being vigilant for slippery roads, especially in the first half hour after rain begins.

As this situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and heed guidance from local authorities. Preparations are key to ensuring safety during these anticipated conditions.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds. Share this information to keep your community informed and safe.
