Urgent Update: Mass Shooting at Utah Church Claims 2 Lives
URGENT UPDATE: A mass shooting outside a church in Salt Lake City has left two dead and six injured, authorities confirm. The incident unfolded Wednesday in the parking lot of a church belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as mourners gathered for a funeral. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute among attendees, all of whom were known to each other.
As of Thursday morning, five victims remain hospitalized, with police protection in place at medical facilities. Among the deceased are Vaea Tulikaninifo, aged 46, and Sione Vatuvei, aged 38. Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd stated, “We are looking into the reason and cause for the gunfire.” Authorities have not yet made any arrests and are unsure if gang activity played a role, citing challenges in obtaining witness cooperation.
Witnesses describe a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted. Brennan McIntire, who lives nearby, recounted hearing multiple shots while watching TV. “As soon as I came over, I see someone on the ground,” he said, recalling the emotional turmoil around him. His wife, Kenna McIntire, expressed her heartbreak, stating, “It was really heartbreaking to hear and see.” Residents from a nearby low-income housing complex rushed to assist victims, underscoring the community’s immediate response to the tragedy.
Over 100 law enforcement vehicles responded to the scene as helicopters circled overhead. Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage and license plate readers from nearby businesses to identify suspects. Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the violence, stating, “This should never have happened outside a place of worship. This should never have happened outside a celebration of life.”
The church, which primarily serves Tongan congregants, expressed deep concern over the incident. Spokesperson Sam Penrod stated, “We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy.” The church cooperated fully with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the sanctity of worship spaces.
Significantly, the faith community has been on heightened alert following a recent violent incident in Michigan, where a former Marine fatally shot four people in a church. The FBI identified anti-religious sentiments as the motive behind that attack, intensifying concerns for safety among Latter-day Saints nationwide.
As investigations continue, the Salt Lake City community is left grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event. Officials urge anyone with information to come forward as the search for answers continues.
