Urgent Wind Advisory Issued for New York Until 1 a.m. Monday
URGENT UPDATE: The National Weather Service has just issued a wind advisory effective until 1 a.m. Monday for multiple counties in New York, including Herkimer, Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany, Rensselaer, Greene, Columbia, Ulster, and Dutchess.
The advisory, issued at 2:03 p.m. Sunday, warns of northwest winds blowing at speeds between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. Authorities caution that these gusty winds could cause unsecured objects to become airborne, down tree limbs, and potentially lead to power outages.
Driving conditions could be hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Officials advise motorists to exercise extreme caution on roadways.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Winds this strong can make driving difficult,”
the National Weather Service stated.
Residents are urged to take immediate action. The weather service outlines a three-tiered alert system:
– **High Wind Warning:** Take action! Strong winds are occurring, and shelter is advised.
– **Wind Advisory:** Strong winds are present but not severe enough for a warning. Secure outdoor items and drive carefully.
– **High Wind Watch:** Be prepared! Strong winds are possible; secure loose outdoor items.
PREPARATION STEPS: As winds are expected to intensify, residents should trim tree branches near homes and power lines and secure loose outdoor items. Identify a safe interior space, such as a basement or bathroom, for shelter during high wind warnings.
Make sure to charge essential devices, including cell phones and weather radios. Emergency kits should be updated with enough food and water to last three days for each person in the household.
If you find yourself outdoors during strong winds, quickly move to a sturdy building. If driving, seek shelter in your vehicle but remain aware of your surroundings, avoiding trees and power lines.
ACTION DURING STRONG WINDS: Stay inside whenever possible. If you’re caught outdoors and cannot find shelter, stay away from the road and attempt to find a location that offers protection from debris.
AFTER THE STORM: Once winds subside, stay clear of downed power lines and report any hazards to local authorities. Handle debris cautiously, as it may pose additional risks.
As this situation develops, stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service and local officials. Your safety is paramount—please take all necessary precautions now to remain safe during this wind advisory.
