UPDATE: The University of Utah Utes are primed for a crucial matchup against the #17 Cincinnati Bearcats this Saturday following a stunning 53-7 victory over Colorado. This dominating win solidified the Utes’ position in the Big 12, and they are set to host Cincinnati at 8:15 p.m. on October 28, 2023, at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Coach Kyle Whittingham expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “You know, just all positives. Really nothing negative coming out of that game.” The Utes’ defense shone brightly, recording seven sacks and limiting the Buffaloes to under 150 yards of offense.

The star of the night was Byrd Ficklin, who made his first career start in place of the injured Devon Dampier. Ficklin rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown while also throwing for two additional touchdowns, earning him the title of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. “My phone was blowing up,” Ficklin said post-game. “First start, first win, I was just enjoying the win with my teammates.”

As the team prepares for the highly anticipated College GameDay presence, Whittingham believes the spotlight will be beneficial. “Those shows do a good job of not really being a distraction for your guys,” he noted. However, the Utes must overcome a troubling trend: in three of the last four GameDay visits to Salt Lake City, they suffered losses.

The critical question remains: who will start against Cincinnati? Whittingham is optimistic about Dampier’s recovery. “He’s certainly feeling better each day,” he reported. “But really, we’ll just have to see how he progresses.” If Dampier is unable to go, Ficklin stands ready to lead again.

With the Utes currently holding a record of 6-2 and 3-2 in the Big 12, the stakes are high. Cincinnati, boasting a record of 7-1 and 5-0 in conference play, presents a formidable challenge. Fans are eager for a thrilling showdown as both teams vie for a pivotal win.

Expect the energy in Salt Lake City to be electric as the Utes look to continue their winning momentum this weekend. Stay tuned for updates as the kickoff approaches!
