UPDATE: The San Antonio Spurs have made history, achieving their first-ever 5-0 start after defeating the Miami Heat 107-101 on November 2, 2023. Star rookie Victor Wembanyama delivered a standout performance with 26 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 blocks, energizing the crowd at Frost Bank Center.

This monumental win marks a significant milestone in the Spurs’ 50th NBA season, a feat Wembanyama is proud to contribute to. “It feels great,” he said. “We worked for it. We started this season strong, and we need to keep that streak going for as long as possible.”

The Spurs faced off against a formidable Heat team, known for their high-scoring prowess, averaging 131.5 points per game. However, San Antonio’s defense shined, restricting Miami to their lowest scoring output of the season, including a mere 14 points in the third quarter.

Despite a strong start, San Antonio saw a 15-point lead evaporate as Miami surged back with a 17-1 run, led by Bam Adebayo who scored 12 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter. However, Wembanyama’s defensive prowess was crucial, as he recorded all five blocks in the second half, including three during the tense final minutes.

The rookie’s emotional response was palpable, as he celebrated a pivotal moment with a loud yell to the sellout crowd of 18,702 fans. “It feels good to have this relief and to live that with these people,” he said. “I was thinking about the 5-0 record, the Spurs’ history, and I was just proud of being a Spur at that moment.”

Wembanyama’s performance is historic, as he becomes only the second player in NBA history to average at least 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks through the first five games of the season since the 1973-74 campaign, following Bob McAdoo in 1975.

Supporting Wembanyama, second-year guard Stephon Castle added 21 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals, while Devin Vassell contributed 17 points and 9 rebounds. Vassell emphasized the importance of consistency, stating, “The little details help us win games, and that’s what happened tonight.”

As the Spurs navigate through their schedule, this victory against the Heat—who are now 3-2—was their toughest challenge yet. Coach Mitch Johnson praised Wembanyama’s endurance, noting, “For him to play through that… was very impressive.”

Looking ahead, the Spurs aim to maintain their momentum as they continue their season. Fans are eager to see if Wembanyama and the Spurs can sustain this historic start and make a strong push for the playoffs.

Stay tuned as the Spurs’ journey unfolds in what promises to be an electrifying season!
