Warriors Edge Nuggets 137-131 as Curry Surges Past Gordon’s 50
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown at Chase Center, the Golden State Warriors overcame a spectacular 50-point performance from Aaron Gordon, defeating the Denver Nuggets 137-131 in overtime on October 26, 2023.
With just 26 seconds left in regulation, Gordon nailed his 10th three-pointer, giving the Nuggets a three-point lead. However, moments later, Stephen Curry delivered a jaw-dropping 34-foot three to tie the game, showcasing his clutch abilities once again. “The bigger the moment, the more he rises,” said Warriors teammate Draymond Green. “He loves the show.”
Curry’s heroics didn’t stop there. He opened overtime with another three and capped it with two free throws, finishing the night with 42 points, solidifying his status as one of the game’s greats. “The shot he made to tie it toward the end [of regulation], it’s a shot that only he can make,” remarked Nuggets coach David Adelman.
Gordon’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. He shot an incredible 17-of-21 from the field and 10-of-11 from beyond the arc, making eight straight threes to start the game, just one shy of an NBA record. “Ridiculous,” Curry praised. “Whatever he did this summer, it worked.” This was a historic night for Gordon, as he became only the 17th player in NBA history to hit 10 threes in a losing effort.
The game turned strategic late in the fourth quarter when Warriors head coach Steve Kerr deployed an unconventional lineup featuring Curry, Jimmy Butler, Jonathan Kuminga, Draymond Green, and new acquisition Al Horford. This five-man unit effectively erased a seven-point deficit in the final minutes, demonstrating the versatility and depth of the Warriors.
Kerr admitted he hadn’t even considered this lineup during training camp. “Where are we going to score?” he questioned. “But [Stotts and DeMarco] reminded me we have Steph and Jimmy, and they’ll find a way to score.” Their combined experience shone through, allowing the Warriors to match up defensively against one of the league’s top teams.
This victory moves the Warriors to 2-0 on the season, building momentum as they aim for a title run. Meanwhile, the Nuggets, now 0-1, will return home to face the Suns on Saturday night. The stakes are high for both teams as they seek to establish their dominance in the Western Conference.
The electrifying clash at Chase Center not only captivated fans but also highlighted the resilience of the Warriors, who continue to be a formidable force in the league. As the NBA season progresses, all eyes will be on how both teams adapt and respond to the challenges ahead.
