Woman Knocked Down by Towering Wave Amid Bay Area King Tides
UPDATE: A woman was violently knocked off her feet by a massive wave at the Pacifica Municipal Pier on November 2, 2023, as the Bay Area experienced dangerous king tides combined with 14 to 25-foot breakers. This alarming incident was captured on video by a viewer and shared by KRON4.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued urgent warnings for the public to avoid jetties, piers, and coastal infrastructure from Thursday through Saturday morning due to hazardous beach conditions. Authorities are stressing the increased risk of sneaker waves during this period, defined as “potentially deadly waves that surge further up the beach than expected.”
The exact nature of the wave that struck the woman remains unclear, but the NWS advises that sneaker waves can strike unexpectedly, urging beachgoers to never turn their backs on the ocean. The NWS warns that these waves can carry a dangerous mix of sand, water, and debris, which can weigh down individuals and make escape nearly impossible.
“Survivors have described the water-sand mix in their clothes as feeling as heavy as concrete, rendering them incapable of escaping the receding waves,” the NWS cautioned.
Officials are particularly concerned about large logs and debris near the surf line, which can become lethal projectiles when caught in sneaker wave action. Injuries and fatalities have occurred due to individuals being trapped under heavy, water-soaked logs.
As the king tides continue to impact the coastline, beach safety remains a top priority for local authorities. Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed and exercise extreme caution if they venture near the water.
The NWS will continue to monitor conditions closely, providing updates as necessary. Stay tuned for further developments on this unfolding situation.
For those in the Bay Area, the message is clear: prioritize safety and stay well away from the shoreline during this perilous weather event.
