Yankees Sign Paul DeJong to Minor League Deal with Spring Invite
UPDATE: The New York Yankees have officially signed infielder Paul DeJong to a minor league contract, complete with an invitation to spring training, as confirmed by sources to ESPN just moments ago. This move comes as the Yankees bolster their infield options ahead of the 2025 season.
DeJong, 32, could earn $1 million if he secures a spot on the major league roster. A seasoned nine-year veteran, he made his mark as the everyday shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals starting in 2017, where he notably finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting. His peak came in 2019 when he was named an All-Star after smashing 30 home runs and achieving a bWAR of 5.2.
Last season, DeJong struggled to maintain that level of production, batting just .228 with six home runs and a .642 OPS across 57 games with the Washington Nationals. He showcased his versatility by starting games at multiple infield positions, including 32 at third base, 11 at second base, and seven at shortstop.
This acquisition follows the Yankees’ recent signing of veteran utility man Amed Rosario to a one-year, $2.5 million major league deal, intended to create a balanced platoon with left-handed hitting Ryan McMahon at third base. Notably, the Yankees are preparing for the start of the season without their starting shortstop, Anthony Volpe, who is recovering from shoulder surgery performed in October.
As the Yankees navigate their roster ahead of spring training, DeJong’s addition provides crucial depth in the infield, especially with other options like Jose Caballero and Oswaldo Cabrera, who is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered last May.
The Yankees’ deal with DeJong was initially reported by The New York Post, further heightening interest in the team’s roster changes as they gear up for a competitive season.
Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops, and watch for DeJong’s performance during spring training, which will be critical in determining his future with the Yankees.
