Acclaimed rock climber Alex Honnold achieved a remarkable feat on March 10, 2024, by successfully completing a ropeless ascent of Taipei 101, which stands at 1,667 feet. This climb is now recognized as the world’s tallest urban free solo ascent. Following his descent, Honnold shared his reflections during a press conference with Netflix commentator Elle Duncan. McCandless added that the day was extraordinary because it allowed viewers to see Honnold’s enthusiasm firsthand.

The first part served as a warm-up, followed by a challenging middle section filled with “bamboo box” platforms, and culminating in a highly exposed final stretch that featured overhangs and a narrow spire. Despite the anxiety-inducing nature of the climb, Honnold maintained a sense of humor. During the ascent, he noted, “I’m feeling kind of tired,” yet he continued with determination. At the summit, he triumphantly stood on the tiny platform of the spire, waving to the crowd and capturing the moment with a quick selfie.

The climb was broadcast globally as Skyscraper Live, Netflix’s latest venture into live programming. This ambitious project included live drone and helicopter footage, along with pre-taped segments detailing the technical demands of Honnold’s climb. A safety delay was implemented to prevent any accidents, and viewers were cautioned against attempting similar feats.

Honnold noted the unique energy from the crowd, which motivated him throughout the climb. “It kind of gave it a different energy, which bolstered me,” he said, describing the experience as more of a celebration than he initially anticipated.
