American Airlines Expands Boeing 737 MAX 8 Fleet to 88 by Year-End

American Airlines is set to expand its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to a total of 88 by the end of this year. The airline recently took delivery of its latest aircraft, registration N316UV, which brings its count of 737 MAX 8s to 85. This growth comes as American Airlines has steadily increased its narrowbody fleet since the first 737 MAX 8 arrived in September 2017.

Fleet Expansion and Future Deliveries

If projections hold true, American Airlines will receive three more 737 MAX 8 deliveries in December 2025, achieving its target of 88 aircraft. Current data from ch-aviation indicates that the airline has an additional 15 Boeing 737 MAX 8s on order. Once all remaining aircraft are delivered, the total number in the fleet will reach 100. Presently, the average age of the 737 MAX 8 fleet is approximately 4.1 years.

American Airlines has configured its 737 MAX 8s to accommodate 172 passengers, divided into two classes: 16 in First Class and 156 in the Main Cabin. The airline utilizes these aircraft across various domestic and international routes. In addition to the growing 737 MAX 8 fleet, American Airlines operates a significant number of Boeing 737-800s, totaling 303 aircraft. With the average age of the 737-800 fleet at 16.1 years, the airline is focusing on modernizing its narrowbody offerings.

Plans for the 737 MAX 10

In 2024, American Airlines placed an order for 115 Boeing 737 MAX 10s, with options for an additional 75 aircraft. The airline anticipates that the 737 MAX 10 will enhance its operational efficiency and meet growing travel demand. The 737 MAX 10 can carry up to 230 passengers and offers a range of approximately 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 kilometers).

Boeing is currently working to obtain Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for both the 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10, expected in 2026. The company has faced challenges, including design changes and regulatory reviews that have delayed the certification process. Notably, there are ongoing concerns regarding the jets’ engine anti-ice systems, which Boeing is actively addressing to avoid potential overheating issues.

As American Airlines awaits its additional 737 MAX 10 deliveries, several other carriers are also in line for these aircraft. United Airlines has adjusted its delivery schedule for 167 MAX 10s, while Delta Air Lines has placed an order for 100 of the same model. Both airlines plan to utilize the 737 MAX 10 to serve mid-range flights that require a higher seating capacity than the MAX 8 or MAX 9 can provide.
