Palmerston, the distinguished black and white cat known for his role as the Chief Mouser at the UK’s Foreign Office, has died in Bermuda, as confirmed by the Foreign Office in London. The feline passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, according to a post on his official social media account. He was 7 years old.

Originally rescued from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Palmerston joined the Foreign Office in 2016 during a significant period in British history, just months before the UK’s referendum on leaving the European Union. His name pays homage to the 19th-century statesman, Viscount Palmerston. The cat quickly became a beloved public figure, amassing nearly 100,000 followers on social media who delighted in his adventures around Westminster.

Palmerston’s Legacy and Contributions

Palmerston’s charm extended beyond his online presence. He engaged in friendly rivalry with Larry, the famous cat residing at 10 Downing Street. Larry expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “Farewell old friend x.”

His contributions to the Foreign Office included pest control, with Palmerston catching his first mouse shortly after starting his position. Simon McDonald, the former Permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, congratulated Palmerston on this achievement through a social media post. Beyond his duties, Palmerston was also a philanthropist, helping to raise more than £3,000 (approximately $4,082) for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

In 2020, Palmerston retired from his role at the Foreign Office, citing a desire to spend more time away from public life, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter addressed to McDonald, Palmerston expressed his fondness for his role, stating, “I will miss hearing the footsteps of an Ambassador and sprinting to my hideout to see who it is.”

A New Chapter in Bermuda

Despite his retirement, Palmerston returned to the public eye in 2025 when he joined Andrew Murdoch, the new Governor of Bermuda. The cat found renewed purpose in the overseas territory, where he enjoyed the warmer climate and sandy beaches. His final days were filled with playful moments, including interactions with large avocados and welcoming foreign dignitaries.

Palmerston’s presence in Bermuda was marked by his participation in local events, including handing out poppies ahead of Remembrance Day. His social media accounts reflected his happy life in paradise, showing a cat that was not just a mascot but a cherished member of the community.

The Foreign Office and the people of Bermuda will remember Palmerston not only for his diplomatic charm but also for the joy he brought to countless lives. His gentle nature and friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure, and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
