Airlines typically configure this model to accommodate between 360 and 400 passengers in a two-class layout, often using a ten-abreast seating arrangement in economy.
The Airbus A350, which first entered service in 2015, was designed with a focus on fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. The A350-900 variant measures around 220 feet (66.8 meters), while the larger A350-1000 stretches to 242 feet 1 inch (73.8 meters). Despite its comparable length, the A350-1000 has a lower MTOW of 679,000 lbs (308 tonnes). This model typically seats 300 to 410 passengers across a three-class configuration, with a focus on spacious seating and advanced cabin designs.
Engine Power and Performance
Engine performance is a key differentiator between these two aircraft. The Boeing 777-300ER is powered by two General Electric GE90-115B engines that generate around 115,000 lbs of thrust each, making them the most powerful engines ever certified for commercial aviation. This capability allows the aircraft to fly up to 7,370 nautical miles (13,650 km), connecting major long-haul city pairs seamlessly.
Conversely, the Airbus A350-1000 features Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, which produce approximately 97,000 lbs of thrust each. Although the A350 has a longer range, estimated between 8,000 and 8,700 nautical miles (14,800 to 16,100 km), the Boeing 777-300ER’s extra thrust allows it to excel in high-capacity routes where both passenger and cargo loads are significant.
The structural differences further highlight the Boeing’s robust design. The fuselage of the Boeing 777-300ER is slightly wider than that of the A350, providing greater cabin space. This additional width, coupled with its larger tail and landing gear, contributes to its imposing presence at airports.
Market Presence and Operational Use
The Boeing 777-300ER has established itself as a cornerstone of long-haul fleets. With over 800 units delivered, it is predominantly operated by airlines such as Emirates, which has more than 120 of these aircraft in service, as well as Qatar Airways, Air France, and others. This model is particularly favored for high-density routes to major international hubs, including London Heathrow and Dubai.
On the other hand, the Airbus A350 has seen rapid adoption since its introduction. As of March 15, 2025, there are more than 630 A350s in operation, with significant fleets in the hands of airlines like Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. The A350 is appealing for its advanced technology and lower fuel burn, making it a preferred choice for airlines focusing on cost efficiency on transcontinental and ultra-long-haul routes.
Both aircraft serve slightly different market needs. The Boeing 777-300ER is designed as a high-capacity twin-engine workhorse, ideal for dense routes, while the Airbus A350 caters to airlines looking for efficiency and comfort, with its lighter construction and modern design features.
The ongoing competition between these two models reflects the evolving demands of the aviation market. Despite their similarities, the Boeing 777-300ER retains its status as the larger aircraft, often regarded as the largest individual model operated by airlines worldwide. In contrast, the Airbus A350 is carving out a significant niche, focusing on optimal long-range performance and operational efficiency.
