Crustacean Chaos: Thousands of Crabs Spill from Truck in Donegal
A dramatic incident unfolded in County Donegal, Ireland, when a transport truck carrying approximately 15,000 live crabs overturned on January 12, 2024. The truck, owned by Odham McLaughlin of McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery, was headed for restaurants in Portugal, valued at around $97,000. Fortunately, the driver emerged unscathed, but the accident unleashed a frenzy of crustaceans desperate to escape.
The mishap occurred just 160 feet from the Atlantic Ocean, and the live crabs seized the opportunity to make a break for freedom. McLaughlin, initially unfazed by the overturned vehicle, quickly realized the severity of the situation. “I was shell-shocked,” he later recounted on the CBC radio show “As It Happens.”
Donegal County Council responded swiftly, closing the road to facilitate a large-scale recovery operation. McLaughlin arrived at the scene to find the crabs “skittering all over,” prompting him to seek help from local residents. He reached out to villages including Burnfoot, Greencastle, and Moville, rallying an army of volunteers to assist in the rescue.
The community response was overwhelming. Approximately 80 volunteers, including men, women, and children, dedicated around 18 hours to capture the fugitive crustaceans. They worked tirelessly in the darkness, gathering the crabs into sandbags before lifting them back into their container using a crane. Tragically, some crabs were lost during the incident, but the volunteers managed to recover about 95 percent of the escapees.
“I don’t think it’ll ever be forgotten,” McLaughlin expressed, reflecting on the community spirit displayed during the operation. Despite the successful recovery, a disappointing twist awaited. Shortly after the rescue, McLaughlin was informed that the entire shipment would need to be disposed of, as the crabs were deemed unfit for human consumption after their ordeal.
The incident highlights not only the challenges of transporting live seafood but also the remarkable solidarity of a community coming together to address a crisis. While the crabs’ journey ended tragically, the efforts of the volunteers will long be remembered in County Donegal.
