Drivers traveling on Interstate 476 should prepare for significant delays on March 10, 2024, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) implements temporary lane striping related to a substantial $63.7 million reconstruction project. This initiative spans both Montgomery and Delaware counties and aims to enhance the highway’s safety and longevity.

Mobile lane closures will be in effect on sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and Route 3 (West Chester Pike) interchanges from 08:00 to 16:00 local time. Motorists can expect traffic slowdowns and potential backups throughout the day as this critical work takes place.

Overview of the Reconstruction Project

The lane striping is part of a comprehensive effort to resurface, repair, and modernize nearly 17 miles of the Blue Route, which includes various on- and off-ramps and bridges extending from West Conshohocken Borough to I-95 in Ridley Township. The project is set to improve ride quality and overall safety, particularly in areas where roadside infrastructure and drainage elements have deteriorated.

Under this extensive plan, PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc. from Skippack, will carry out several key tasks. These include milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, repairing 49 structures, upgrading 21 stormwater management basins, and addressing rock slope stabilization issues. Additionally, existing sound walls will be repaired, drainage inlets will be replaced in select locations, and new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails will be installed.

The entire project is financed through federal funds, ensuring that the necessary improvements are made without impacting state budgets.

Advice for Motorists

As the reconstruction progresses, PennDOT urges drivers to allow extra travel time, remain vigilant in work zones, and consider alternate routes when possible. The work is weather-dependent, and all scheduled activities may be subject to change based on conditions.

For real-time updates on lane closures, traffic conditions, and delays across Chester County and the surrounding area, motorists are encouraged to visit the MyChesCo Traffic Center prior to their journeys. Following MyChesCo on platforms like Google News and MSN will also help keep travelers informed about the latest developments in the region.

This ongoing reconstruction project represents a significant investment in infrastructure, aimed at ensuring a safer and more efficient travel experience for all users of the interstate.
