The Boeing 747, once a staple of commercial aviation, has significantly diminished in presence among scheduled passenger flights. As of 2026, only a few operators continue to fly the iconic aircraft, primarily on long-haul routes. However, new data from Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, reveals that the Boeing 747 is also making its mark on shorter routes, with some flights measuring less than 700 miles.

Shortest Routes in the World

The shortest scheduled passenger flight operated by the Boeing 747 family this year is the 664-mile route from Moscow Sheremetyevo Alexander S Pushkin International Airport (SVO) to Kaliningrad (KGD). This service includes two flights by Aeroflot, operated by Rossiya Airlines using Boeing 747-400 jets configured to carry a remarkable 522 passengers.

Following closely is Air China’s domestic route from Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport (SHA), spanning 667 miles (1,073 km). Air China has scheduled 289 flights on this corridor with the Boeing 747-400 and an additional 489 flights using the newer 747-8 model this year. He Li, Vice President of Air China, stated in 2011, “Air China has been operating 747s since the 1980s. The new, high-capacity Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental will deliver exceptional economics and a great flying experience to our customers.”

Additional Short Hops Across Asia

In addition to these routes, Korean Air operates three relatively short flights with its Boeing 747 aircraft. Departing from its hub at Seoul Incheon Airport (ICN), these routes connect to Tokyo Narita (NRT), Taipei (TPE), and Hong Kong (HKG), with distances of 783 miles (1,260 km), 907 miles (1,460 km), and 1,284 miles (2,066 km) respectively.

While these distances are longer than those of Aeroflot and Air China, the frequency of service is notably less. For instance, the route to Taipei has 14 round trips scheduled from January to March, while the Hong Kong route features just six rotations. The Tokyo Narita route has the least frequency, with only three round trips planned throughout the first quarter of the year.

Air China also operates two more routes that exceed the 1,000-mile mark, with the Beijing Capital to Guangzhou route at 1,165 miles (1,875 km) and the Beijing to Shenzhen route at 1,212 miles (1,951 km). This year, the Guangzhou route has 569 rotations scheduled with the 747-8 and 178 rotations with the 747-400, while the Shenzhen route has 369 rotations with the 747-400.

Despite the decline of the Boeing 747, some airlines continue to utilize this iconic aircraft on shorter routes, showcasing its versatility and enduring appeal.

The remaining shortest scheduled passenger routes rank eighth to tenth with significantly longer distances. The routes from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Blagoveshchensk (3,486 miles or 5,610 km) and Magadan (3,653 miles or 5,879 km) are served by Rossiya’s 747-400s on behalf of Aeroflot, with respective rotations of 102 and 230 flights planned for the year. Rounding out the top ten is a Lufthansa route from Frankfurt (FRA) to Boston (BOS), which the German airline is scheduled to operate 237 times this year with the Boeing 747-400, including a single trip using the 747-8 on April 1.

While the era of the Boeing 747 may be waning, its presence on these shorter routes demonstrates that there is still a place for the “Queen of the Skies” in modern aviation.
