Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons Star in Dark Comedy ‘Bugonia’
Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons headline the new dark comedy film, Bugonia, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. Plemons, known for his compelling performances, encourages audiences to set aside their streaming services and experience this unique film in theaters. With its theatrical release scheduled for this weekend, Bugonia promises to deliver a gripping blend of surrealism and reality.
Plemons portrays a conspiracy theorist who kidnaps Stone’s character, a pharmaceutical CEO, under the delusion that she is an alien. The film, which features a powerful musical score and raw acting, aims to resonate deeply with viewers. Its premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival has already garnered significant attention and praise.
Insights into ‘Bugonia’
The film draws inspiration from the 2003 South Korean movie Save the Green Planet! and has been adapted for the screen by Will Tracy. Stone not only stars in the film but also served as a producer, working diligently to maintain the project’s integrity throughout its development. Critics have noted that despite its seemingly limited scope, Bugonia feels expansive and impactful, showcasing Lanthimos’ signature style.
In a recent review, AP Film Writer Jake Coyle described Bugonia as a “chamber-piece gut punch” that leaves a lasting impression on its audience. Coyle highlighted the film’s striking dialogue, including memorable lines that encapsulate its quirky essence, such as, “There’s Andromedan code all over your Instagram.”
Controversy Surrounds Jodi Picoult’s Musical
In other entertainment news, author Jodi Picoult is facing significant challenges regarding her work. The superintendent of Mississinewa High School in Indiana recently canceled a musical adaptation of her novel Between the Lines. The cancellation was reportedly due to concerns about “sexual innuendo” and references to alcohol.
This decision has sparked a debate about censorship, with Picoult arguing that one parent should not dictate what is appropriate for others’ children. Ironically, the same school previously staged productions of Grease, which contains similar themes. Picoult’s novels have faced numerous bans, with her book Nineteen Minutes being restricted 16 times just this year.
Harry Potter Stars Return in New Audiobook
Meanwhile, the beloved characters of the Harry Potter series are making a comeback. Young British actors Frankie Treadaway, Arabella Stanton, and Max Lester are set to voice Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively, for a new audiobook adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The release is scheduled for November 4, 2023, and will feature multiple actors for different roles, offering a fresh take on J.K. Rowling’s classic story.
While recording, the trio expressed their enjoyment of voice acting and the magical world of Harry Potter. They also humorously noted the benefits of having a snack cupboard filled with chocolate to keep their energy up during long recording sessions.

The American Federation of Musicians Local 802 had issued a strike threat if a new contract was not secured by Thursday morning, following mediation talks.
Representing around 1,200 musicians, the union’s agreement came just days after another labor deal was reached with the Actors’ Equity Association, which represents 51,000 members. Among the shows at risk were iconic productions like Hamilton and The Lion King, as well as newer offerings such as Queen of Versailles and Chess.
