Jane Austen enthusiasts around the globe marked the esteemed author’s 250th birthday on December 16, 2025, with a series of celebrations. Events took place in her home village of Chawton, England, featuring a church service, guided tours, and performances, while fans also participated from afar through a virtual party.
In Chawton, the iconic Jane Austen’s House served as a focal point for the day’s festivities. The historic cottage, where Austen spent the final years of her life and wrote all six of her novels, welcomed dozens of visitors eager to engage with her legacy. According to the local organizers, the day included insightful talks and engaging tours that celebrated Austen’s contributions to literature.
The online event attracted significant interest, with over 500 participants from diverse locations including Chile, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. Guests were encouraged to don Regency attire, adding a festive and authentic touch to the virtual gathering.
Lizzie Dunford, director of Jane Austen’s House, expressed her enthusiasm for the yearlong celebration. “It has been an absolute joy to spend 2025 celebrating the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. It has been a year filled with laughter, love, community and inspiration,” she stated. “Here’s to the next 250 years.”
In addition to the events in Chawton, a church service was held in Steventon, the village where Austen was born. The service featured music and readings, drawing in fans who identify as “Janeites.” Throughout the year, these devoted followers have celebrated Austen’s legacy with Regency-themed balls and festivals across the United Kingdom and the United States.
