Flooding Damages Hundreds of Artworks at Louvre Museum

A significant flooding incident at the Louvre Museum in Paris has resulted in damage to hundreds of artworks. According to Francis Steinbock, the museum’s deputy general administrator, at least 300 to 400 works were affected when a pipe burst in one of the Egyptian antiquities libraries last week. The flooding primarily impacted one of the three rooms within the Egyptian antiquities department.

Steinbock confirmed that a complete assessment of the damaged works is ongoing. Many of the affected items include books, some dating back several centuries and as recent as the late 19th century. He mentioned that some of these books were wet and efforts are underway to dry them. The restoration process involves dehumidifying each page with the assistance of Buffard paper and modifying plants to aid in the drying.

Additionally, the affected library holds valuable visual periodicals and archaeological journals frequently consulted by Egyptologists, museum staff, and researchers. Steinbock indicated that the area where the pipe burst is scheduled for a major renovation, which will focus on updating the ventilation and heating systems beginning in September 2023.

Recent Challenges for the Louvre

This flooding incident marks the latest in a series of challenges for the Louvre, which is the most visited museum globally. In a notable event just two months prior, on October 19, 2023, a bold jewelry heist took place, where four thieves stole eight of France’s crown jewels, valued at approximately €88 million (about $102 million), in under eight minutes.

The investigation into the stolen jewels continues, with Paris’ prosecutor confirming that four suspects believed to be part of the robbery team have been arrested. Each individual faces preliminary charges of robbery by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, stated that DNA traces were located at the scene or on items related to the theft. In addition to the suspects, a woman was detained on preliminary charges of complicity in theft and criminal conspiracy; she has denied any involvement, as reported by The Associated Press.
