German Chancellor Merz Meets Erdogan to Discuss Key Issues
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to arrive in Turkey on Wednesday for his first official visit, meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday. The discussions in Ankara will center around significant geopolitical issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and peace initiatives in the Middle East, where Turkey has assumed a mediating role.
Key topics on the agenda are expected to include migration challenges and defence cooperation. A notable aspect of this cooperation could involve Turkey’s assistance in the deportation of Syrians who currently lack legal status in Germany. This issue has gained prominence amid ongoing discussions about migration policies across Europe.
Another focal point of the discussions will be defence agreements. Recently, an important step was taken with the signing of a contract for the delivery of Eurofighter jets to Turkey. These jets are produced in Britain as part of a multinational consortium that includes Germany, Italy, and Spain. Consequently, the approval of all four nations is necessary for any export deal to proceed.
Political Context and Opposition Concerns
Merz’s visit may be overshadowed by the recent arrest warrant issued for Turkish opposition leader Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has been detained since March 2023. The detention has raised serious concerns about the state of democracy in Turkey. Lars Klingbeil, the leader of the Social Democratic Party in Germany, previously described İmamoğlu’s arrest as a “serious attack” on democratic values.
When questioned about whether Merz would engage with opposition politicians during his trip, a government spokesperson emphasized that the primary focus would be on the discussions with Erdogan: “I am not aware of any further meetings.” This statement suggests that the chancellor’s engagement will be closely aligned with the priorities set by the Turkish president.
As Merz embarks on this diplomatic journey, the outcomes of the talks may have implications for both countries, particularly in addressing migration and enhancing defence collaboration. The visit marks a critical moment in Germany’s approach to international relations in the region, reflecting the complexities involved in navigating these pressing global issues.
