Green Party Leader Advocates Drug Legalization Despite Personal Abstinence
Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, revealed on the BBC’s “Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg” that he has never consumed drugs or alcohol in his life. Despite his personal abstinence, Polanski strongly advocates for the legalization and regulation of all drugs. His comments were made in response to a question about his university experiences with drugs.
“I’ve actually never taken a drug in my life, or even drunk alcohol,” Polanski stated. He emphasized that his personal choices do not equate to a stance against others enjoying substances responsibly. “I very clearly believe people should be able to do what they want to do. It just wasn’t for me,” he added.
In his discussion, Polanski criticized politicians who have admitted to drug use yet support punitive measures against drug users. He described this as a “hypocritical approach,” arguing that a “public health approach” is essential to prevent drug-related deaths. “It’s about legalising and regulating,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of ensuring that individuals with problematic relationships with drugs receive proper medical support.
Polanski’s comments come in the wake of a political exchange with Labour leader Keir Starmer, who previously described his university days as a time of “working hard and playing hard.” During a parliamentary session, Starmer accused the Green Party of being “high on drugs, soft on Putin.” In response, Polanski criticized Starmer’s remarks as “pretty disgraceful,” emphasizing the seriousness of the drug issue and the need for respectful discourse.
The Green Party leader pointed out that drug enforcement disproportionately impacts young black and brown individuals. He stated, “Illegal drug use is very racialised,” noting that innocent young black people are more likely to be stopped and searched for drugs compared to their white peers. He called out past Labour and Conservative ministers who have publicly admitted to drug use while advocating for the imprisonment of users.
When questioned about the potential message legalizing Class A drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, might send to young people, Polanski initially redirected the conversation to alcohol, which he described as “one of the most dangerous drugs.” He stressed that addressing substance use requires a comprehensive public health strategy, stating, “The war on drugs is not working. In fact, it’s making drugs more dangerous.”
Polanski argued that the current approach pushes drug use into the shadows, creating black markets and increasing risks. He insisted that society requires a mature conversation rooted in evidence, focused on prevention and intervention, ensuring individuals receive the support they need.
When asked if his teetotalism was a matter of principle, he clarified, “Not at all. I just grew up in school where a lot of my friends were drinking and, in fact, taking drugs. And often it felt like someone needed to be sober.”
In a lighter moment during the interview, Polanski shared that he used to breakdance, stating, “I’ve always liked dancing without taking drink or drugs.” He expressed his happiness for those who choose to partake in substances safely, while underscoring the necessity of providing support for those who do not.
Polanski’s comments highlight a growing debate over drug policy in the UK, as advocates push for reforms that prioritize health and safety over criminalization.
