Harris Teeter Expands Presence with Five New Supermarkets
Harris Teeter, a supermarket chain owned by Kroger, is set to strengthen its footprint in the southeastern United States with plans to open five new supermarkets. These stores will be located in Clemson, Lake Wylie, and Fort Mill in South Carolina, as well as Jacksonville, Florida, and Kannapolis, North Carolina. The openings are slated to occur over the next couple of years as part of a long-term growth strategy.
This expansion comes at a time when Kroger is closing several other locations nationwide, including two stores in Arlington, Virginia. The company emphasized that the decision to open new stores aligns with its goal of optimizing business operations.
Details of the New Stores
The new Harris Teeter locations will feature modern amenities and a variety of offerings. Each store will include a drive-thru pharmacy and a gas station, alongside contemporary decor. Shoppers can expect extensive fresh food sections, a dedicated Murry’s Cheese island, fresh pizza, and an Asian hot bar. Notably, three of the locations—those in Jacksonville, Lake Wylie, and Fort Mill—will feature full-service wine and beer bars, enhancing the shopping experience.
The stores in Kannapolis and Clemson are planned to be approximately 53,000 square feet, while the Jacksonville, Lake Wylie, and Fort Mill locations will be larger at around 61,000 square feet. This expansion marks the first Harris Teeter stores in Jacksonville, Clemson, Lake Wylie, and Kannapolis, while the Fort Mill store will add to the existing presence in that area.
Danna Robinson, the director of corporate affairs and customer relations for Harris Teeter, stated, “We’ve seen incredible support from our customers, and this growth allows us to meet rising demand while continuing to deliver the exceptional experience our brand is known for.”
Job Creation and Online Services
The introduction of these new supermarkets is expected to create between 100 and 200 jobs at each location, encompassing various roles in customer service, pharmacy, fresh foods, fuel stations, and store management.
In addition to physical shopping, Harris Teeter and Kroger are enhancing their online services. Customers can access same-day delivery through Instacart for a fee of $6.95, with some orders eligible for delivery in as little as 30 minutes if the total exceeds $10. New customers can also benefit from a $15 discount on their first delivery order of $75 or more.
The brand has cultivated a loyal following on social media, with some consumers expressing strong preferences for Harris Teeter over competitors such as Aldi.
Strategic Restructuring and Consumer Impact
The announcement of these new locations coincides with Kroger’s broader restructuring strategy. Over the next 18 months, the company plans to close around 60 locations in states including Georgia, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia. The anticipated $3.6 billion in savings from these closures will be redirected towards new or renovated stores, including the five new Harris Teeter locations.
As the company reallocates resources from underperforming stores to areas with growth potential, local consumers will experience varied impacts. Some communities will benefit from new Harris Teeter stores, while others will face the closure of existing locations.
With this expansion, Harris Teeter aims not only to enhance its market presence but also to align with customer preferences in an evolving retail landscape.
