The upcoming performance of Hidden Voices: Queer Artists in Exchange shines a light on the often-overlooked queer identities of renowned composers. Set to take place on November 13 and 14, 2023, at the Space Theatre in London, this innovative program aims to explore the personal lives of celebrated musicians such as Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Ethel Smyth, Francis Poulenc, and Benjamin Britten.

The creative team behind the production emphasizes that the queer identities and romantic lives of these composers have frequently been disregarded or deliberately hidden within both society and the classical music scene. According to the team, “This program aims to make carefully selected works and personal letters audible and tangible, providing insight, context, and contrast, thus honoring the artists’ identities and stories.”

The performance will feature songs from these famed composers, performed by mezzo-soprano Neelam Brader, accompanied by pianist Judith Valerie Engel. Actor Simon Christian will stage readings of letters and writings exchanged between the composers and their friends and lovers. This unique blend of music and literature aims to delve into the emotional landscapes of these artists, revealing their intimate thoughts and struggles against the societal constraints of their time.

Exploring Hidden Narratives

“We all know their names, we know their music, but so little is known about the queer lives they lived,”

states a synopsis of Hidden Voices available on the Space Theatre’s website. The performance seeks to address pivotal questions about these composers’ lives, including the identity of the man beside Britten, the dynamics at the famous ‘Schubertiaden’, and the romantic dedications behind Chopin’s waltzes.

The production is a continuation of its success in Vienna, Austria, where it was part of the Kultursommer Wien. By bringing this work to London as part of the Voila! Theatre Festival, the creators hope to unveil the vulnerability and resilience of these musical geniuses, offering audiences a rare glimpse into their hidden (love) lives.

With its focus on emotional authenticity and historical context, Hidden Voices promises to resonate deeply with audiences, shedding light on the complex identities of some of classical music’s most iconic figures. This performance not only honors their artistic contributions but also celebrates the rich tapestry of their personal narratives, which have long been shrouded in silence.

As the event approaches, anticipation builds for a performance that aims to redefine how we understand the lives and legacies of these extraordinary composers.
