High-Speed Train Collision in Spain Claims 39 Lives, Injures Many

A tragic train collision in Spain has resulted in the deaths of at least 39 people and left more than 122 others injured. The accident occurred on the evening of January 19, 2026, near Adamuz at approximately 19:45 local time. A high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with another train arriving from Madrid to Huelva, according to the Spanish rail operator Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF).

The collision took place when the rear of the Malaga-Madrid train went off the rails, leading to a catastrophic impact with the oncoming train. The head of the second train absorbed most of the force, as reported by Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente. The impact caused several carriages of the second train, which was carrying around 200 passengers, to plunge down a 4-meter slope. Recovery efforts have been complicated, with some bodies discovered hundreds of meters from the crash site.

In the aftermath of the collision, emergency services confirmed that 48 individuals remain hospitalized, with 12 in critical condition within intensive care units. A young woman identified only as Ana recounted her experience, stating, “The train tipped to one side… then everything went dark, and all I heard [were] screams.” Ana, who was traveling with her sister, was rescued by fellow passengers while firefighters assisted her sister.

This incident marks the deadliest train crash in Spain since the Santiago de Compostela derailment in 2013, which claimed the lives of 80 people. Following the collision, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of national mourning to honor the victims. In a statement on social media, Sánchez expressed his condolences and solidarity with the families affected by this tragedy.

The collision has raised serious concerns about rail safety in Spain. Reports indicate that ADIF had received warnings regarding “severe wear and tear” on the high-speed rail tracks in 2025.
