Iran’s Khamenei Goes Underground Amid US Airstrike Fears

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly gone into hiding, retreating to a fortified bunker in Tehran due to escalating fears of potential U.S. airstrikes. This development comes as the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group approaches the Persian Gulf, heightening tensions between Iran and the United States.

Concerns about a military confrontation have intensified following statements from senior Iranian military officials, who warned of an increased likelihood of a U.S. attack. According to reports from Iran International, Khamenei, 86, is now managing the Islamic Republic’s affairs from a network of underground tunnels designed for protection. His youngest son, Masoud Khamenei, 53, has taken on the responsibility of overseeing daily operations and serving as the main communication link with the regime’s executive branch.

In a show of military strength, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on March 15, 2024, that the Navy was deploying a significant “armada” to the region as a warning to Khamenei. The Abraham Lincoln is not alone, as it is accompanied by three destroyers and is currently traversing from the Indian Ocean to the Persian Gulf, where tensions are palpable.

While Tehran has publicly maintained a stance of defiance, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a stark warning, stating that any attack on Khamenei would be viewed as “an all-out war against us.” Additionally, Iran’s national security parliamentary commission declared that any aggression towards the supreme leader would lead to a declaration of jihad, according to the Iranian Students News Agency.

Khamenei’s absence from public discourse has raised questions about his current status. He has not posted on social media platform X since January 17, 2023, and it remains unclear when he entered hiding. This is not the first instance of Khamenei retreating underground; he also did so during the 12-Day War with Israel in June 2022, where he prepared a list of potential successors in case of his death.

His silence follows a period of significant unrest in Iran, where widespread protests have erupted against the government, largely driven by economic turmoil exacerbated by severe drought conditions. Reports indicate that regime forces have responded violently, resulting in the deaths of at least 3,000 civilians, with some estimates suggesting the toll could be as high as 20,000.
