Former President Joe Biden has reached a significant milestone in his treatment for prostate cancer, completing a round of radiation therapy on Monday. The 82-year-old Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease in May 2023, which has spread to his bones. His treatment has taken place at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia, although it remains unclear if further radiation will be necessary.

Biden’s daughter, Ashley Biden, shared the moment of celebration on social media, posting a video of her father ringing a bell to mark the completion of this phase of treatment. In her Instagram Stories, she expressed gratitude for the medical team, stating, “Rung the bell! Thank you to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at Penn Medicine. We are so grateful!” Another post highlighted her father’s bravery throughout his health challenges.

The former president’s cancer is characterized by a Gleason score of 9, indicating it is among the most aggressive types of prostate cancer. Gleason scores range from 6 to 10, with higher scores signifying more severe forms of the disease. Despite the diagnosis, Biden’s office indicated that his cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which could potentially allow for effective treatment options.

In June, following his diagnosis, Biden expressed optimism about his health, stating, “The prognosis is good. We’re working on everything. It’s moving along. I feel good.” Additionally, in September, he underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead, employing Mohs surgery. This technique involves removing thin layers of skin that are examined during the procedure until only healthy tissue remains.

Biden left the presidency in January and had previously suspended his reelection campaign last summer after a debate with President Donald Trump, which raised concerns regarding his health and cognitive fitness. The former president’s health status has sparked discussions about the transparency of the White House regarding medical issues during his administration.

In response to these concerns, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee has initiated an investigation into the potential misuse of the autopen during Biden’s final months in office. They have requested testimony from Biden’s physician, Kevin O’Connor, as well as four senior aides, including former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. A report detailing the committee’s findings is expected to be released soon.

Biden has firmly denied any claims suggesting he lacked awareness of his administration’s decisions, asserting, “Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false.”

As Biden continues his battle with cancer, the former president remains focused on his health and the challenges ahead.
