San Francisco pitcher Luis Custodio and free agent pitcher Luis Sierra have each been suspended for 56 games following positive drug tests. The announcement was made by Major League Baseball (MLB) on Monday, revealing that both players tested positive for the banned substance Stanozolol, as part of the minor league drug program applicable to players outside the United States and Canada.

Luis Custodio, a 21-year-old left-hander, had a challenging season last year, finishing with a record of 2-1 and a 7.94 ERA over 12 relief appearances with the Giants Black team in the Dominican Summer League. This performance came after his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he signed with the Giants in 2023, indicating a hopeful return to form.

In contrast, Luis Sierra, a 20-year-old right-hander, signed with the Baltimore Orioles for a $10,000 bonus in June 2024. His time with the DSL Orioles was less successful, as he recorded an 0-2 record and a 9.95 ERA in 11 relief appearances. Sierra was released from the Orioles on January 5, 2025, and his suspension will take effect once he signs with a major league team.

The suspensions of Custodio and Sierra add to a growing list of players penalized this year for violations of the drug policy. Notably, free agent outfielder Max Kepler was suspended for 80 games just last Friday after testing positive for Epitrenbolone.

These developments highlight the ongoing challenges within minor league baseball regarding performance-enhancing drugs and the enforcement of league policies aimed at maintaining fair play. As the season progresses, teams and players alike will be closely monitoring the implications of these suspensions on their rosters and future prospects.
