Najib Razak Found Guilty of Abuse of Power in 1MDB Case
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was convicted of abuse of power on Friday in a landmark verdict connected to the multibillion-dollar 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. This ruling marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal battles surrounding the state fund, which Najib co-founded in 2009. The judge has yet to deliver the full verdict and sentencing, but the decision could significantly impact Malaysia’s political landscape.
Investigators from Malaysia and the United States estimate that at least $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB, with over $1 billion allegedly funneled into accounts associated with Najib. He faces serious charges, including four counts of corruption and 21 counts of money laundering linked to illegal transfers exceeding 2.3 billion ringgit (approximately $569.45 million).
In his ruling, Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah stated that the evidence against Najib clearly demonstrated misuse of his position and dismissed the former prime minister’s claims of political persecution. The judge emphasized that the prosecution had presented “cold, hard and incontrovertible evidence” of Najib’s misconduct. The former leader could potentially face prison terms of between 15 and 20 years for each charge, as well as fines that could reach up to five times the value of the misappropriated amounts.
Najib, now 72 years old, has been incarcerated since August 2022, following a previous conviction for corruption involving illegal funds from a 1MDB subsidiary. In an unexpected turn, his initial 12-year sentence was reduced last year by a pardons board, but the gravity of the current verdict could complicate his legal situation further.
During the trial, Judge Sequerah noted Najib’s “unmistakable bond” with Jho Low, a fugitive financier considered pivotal to the 1MDB scandal. Low, who has been charged in the United States for his role in the case, remains at large and denies any wrongdoing. While Najib has expressed regret over his handling of the 1MDB crisis, he maintains that he was misled by Low and other officials, claiming that the funds in question were donations from the Saudi royal family. Judge Sequerah dismissed these arguments as “implausible,” stating that evidence indicated the funds were derived directly from 1MDB.
The conviction arrives just days after another court rejected Najib’s petition to serve his sentence under house arrest, igniting tensions within the coalition government led by current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Najib’s party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), initially opposed Anwar’s administration during the 2022 elections but later joined his coalition after a hung parliament. Some UMNO leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the recent court decision, while others were angered by social media posts from Anwar’s coalition members that celebrated the ruling.
In response to the unrest following the verdict, Anwar called for calm and urged all parties involved to accept the court’s decision with “full patience and wisdom.” The political ramifications of this ruling could reverberate throughout Malaysia, as it highlights ongoing divisions and challenges within the government.
