NATO Launches Arctic Sentry to Boost Security Amid Rising Tensions

NATO has initiated a significant operation named Arctic Sentry in the High North, aimed at addressing increasing military activity from Russia and growing interest from China in the Arctic region. This marks NATO’s third such operation within a year, following Baltic Sentry and Eastern Sentry, which were launched on January 14, 2025, and September 12, 2025, respectively.

The announcement came through a NATO news release published on March 6, 2025, emphasizing the need for enhanced collective security in this strategically vital area. As articulated in the release, “With Russia’s increasing military activity and China’s growing interest in the Arctic, Allies have agreed to do more to ensure our collective security in this vital region.”

Background and Strategic Context

Arctic Sentry is being led by the Joint Force Command in Norfolk, Virginia. The operation aims to consolidate NATO and allied activities into a comprehensive operational strategy, incorporating various exercises such as Denmark’s Arctic Endurance and the upcoming Cold Response exercise in Norway, scheduled for March 9-19, 2025.

A NATO primer highlights a significant uptick in Russian military operations in the Arctic. This includes the establishment of a new Arctic command, the reopening of former Soviet military sites, and the testing of advanced weaponry. Concurrently, China’s interest in the Arctic is intensifying, driven by its pursuit of energy resources, critical minerals, and vital maritime routes. The growing cooperation between Russia and China poses strategic challenges to NATO’s deterrence and defense posture in the region.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of Arctic Sentry, stating, “We will not only be able to leverage what we are doing much more effectively and have a bigger impact, but we will also be able to assess which gaps there are that we will have to fill, and of course, we will fill them.”

International Contributions and Exercises

Numerous NATO member countries are contributing to the Arctic Sentry operation. Sweden, which became a NATO member in 2024, announced it will deploy JAS 39 Gripen fighters to support operations around Iceland and Greenland. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson remarked, “As a NATO Ally, Sweden has a responsibility to contribute to the security of the entire territory of the Alliance. The Arctic region is becoming increasingly important from a strategic perspective.”

Additionally, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that Germany will participate in the first phase of Arctic Sentry with the deployment of four Eurofighter jets and air-to-air refueling capabilities. Denmark is also actively participating in coordination with Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Danish Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen stressed the need to maintain momentum to ensure the Arctic’s importance is reflected in NATO’s long-term plans.

In a related move to enhance NATO’s presence in the High North, the United Kingdom announced it will double its troop deployment to Norway from 1,000 to 2,000 personnel over the next three years. U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey stated, “Russia poses the greatest threat to Arctic and High North security that we have seen since the Cold War.”
