Obama Foundation Highlights Challenges in Hungary and Poland
Former President Barack Obama has brought attention to the challenges facing democracy in Poland and Hungary. His remarks came during a conversation with alumni of the Obama Foundation on October 11, 2025, where he emphasized that these nations are “on the brink of autocracy.” This focus reflects the foundation’s commitment to supporting democratic values across the globe.
The three alumni who participated in the discussion—Zuzanna Rudzinska-Bluszcz from Poland, and Sándor Léderer and Stefania Kapronczay from Hungary—shared their insights on the current political climate. Rudzinska-Bluszcz, who served as Poland’s deputy justice minister from 2023 to 2025, discussed her efforts in advocating for marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ community and political dissidents. She criticized the rhetoric used by some politicians at the United Nations General Assembly, labeling them as “authoritarians” for their stance on immigration.
Léderer, co-founder and director of the anti-corruption watchdog K-Monitor, argued for a shift in focus from merely protecting democracy to actively renewing it. He stated, “Forget about what we’ve lost, because it’s over,” highlighting the need for a vision of the future rather than nostalgia for past democratic structures.
Kapronczay, who served as co-director of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, echoed similar sentiments. She pointed out the disillusionment many citizens feel towards democracy and suggested starting grassroots initiatives to rebuild trust and engagement in democratic processes.
Obama noted that the “liberal democratic market-based order” has increasingly lost touch with the general populace, failing to meet their basic hopes and aspirations. This disconnect, he argued, has contributed to the rise of right-wing populism and authoritarianism worldwide. He expressed concern about the growing wave of authoritarianism, stating, “We’re seeing politicians target civil society, undermine freedom of the press, weaponize the justice system.”
In response, Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s Prime Minister, faced criticism from his political director, Balázs Orbán. He dismissed Obama’s comments as part of a “left’s playbook” that employs foreign experts to critique Hungary without understanding its sovereignty. Balázs stated, “Hungary neither requires your validation nor seeks your permission.” This reflects a broader sentiment in Hungary, where the government has maintained a conservative supermajority under Orbán, who has developed close ties with former President Donald Trump.
Poland, also facing scrutiny, has a government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk of the center-right party, with President Karol Nawrocki aligning with nationalist conservative ideologies. These alliances illustrate a shared political landscape that favors right-wing populist sentiments, further complicating efforts to restore democratic norms.
In conclusion, the discussions facilitated by the Obama Foundation shine a light on the critical state of democracy in Hungary and Poland. It underscores the urgent need for local leaders to foster democratic engagement and address the underlying issues that have led to the current political climate. As these countries navigate their futures, the dialogue initiated by Obama and his foundation may serve as a catalyst for change.
